This is photos/video taken from the final day (October 31st, 2009) of the O'Neill Coldwater Classic in Tofino which is the traditional Territory of the Nuu-chah-nulth people. This is the first time such an event has been held in Nuuchahnulth territory. This was also a first for Canada.
Peter Devries, who is a local of Tofino, won first place, taking home $20k. This is the first time a Canadian has ever won first place in any professional surf competition anywhere in the world.
The first place trophy was a traditional Nuu-chah-nulth carved paddle, carved by Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations member Carl Martin.
