Judging Criteria
A surfer must perform radical controlled maneuvers in the
critical section of a wave with speed, power and flow to maximize scoring
potential. Innovative/progressive surfing, a variety of repertoire and executes
this criteria with maximum degree of difficulty and commitment. Longboard
‘tricks’ can be performed and will be viewed as a surfer being in control but
not add to the scoring potential.
- Each
contestant is judged on his/her top 2 waves on a 1-10 scale, 10-wave maximum.
·
The total of the two top-scoring waves
ridden will be used for each
competitor’s score.
·
An interference call during a heat
will reduce a rider’s second-best-scoring wave by half. A second interference
call will reduce a rider’s best-scoring wave by half.
- Types of interferences
- Dropping in on another contestant
- Standing up after your heat ends
- Continuing to surf
- Flagrant interferences at the judges’
discretion could lead to a disqualification.
- More than 2 interferences by the same
rider, in the same heat, will lead to an automatic disqualification
- Arrive
10 minutes before heat to check in with the beach captain
- Stay
insight of the judges, if you think they can’t see you, assume that they
can’t. The beach captain serves as
a focal point for the heat. Stay in
front of or slightly too either side of him/her.
- You
may ride up to a 7’4” in the Pro/Am, Shortboard divisions
- Minimum
of 9’ rider for longboard division
The Heat : 15-20 minutes in length
HORNS:
- 1 horn
blast starts and ends the heat
- 2 horn
blasts means 5 minute warning/paddle out
FLAGS:
- One
flag up signals the start and end of the heat
- Two
flags up signals the 5 minute warning for the end of the heat AND paddle
out period for the upcoming heat.
The following score sheet is not an ISA sheet but an adaptation from the Pacific Northwest Judges. ISA Judged scores are a little more defined as follows:
Bad Waves 0.1 to 1.9
| Poor Waves 2.0 to 3.9
| Average Waves 4.0 to 5.9
| Good Waves 6.0 to 7.9
| Excellent Waves 8.0 to 10.00
