| 4th Annual Christian Surfers of Oregon Open at Nelscott Beach, Lincoln City, June 17 - 18, 2006
The Christian Surfers of Oregon held their 4th annual CSO Open at
Nelscott Beach, Lincoln City last weekend. Close to 80 competitors
registered to participate including a half dozen from BC that made
the drive south to compete. The CSO Open is the only annual contest
on the Oregon coast with shortboard divisions, longboarders
dominating the contest scene there.
The conditions were good
Saturday morning with solid overhead and a half sets and light winds
but as the day and the weekend progressed the wind switched to strong
onshore, the swell dropped, and typical NW Coast contest conditions
prevailed. Canada's top judge Barbie Mayor was invited to work the
event on the heals of her participation at this years Surfrider
Foundation's Clean Water Classic in Washington. Almost all of the
Canadian surfers competed in the Open Shortboard division and only
one made it as far as the semifinals. Two Canadian juniors surfed in
the under 16 year old Groms division. CC Unger-Mayor placed first in
that division and returned to Canada with a cool trophy created using
a hand blown glass replica of a Japanese fishing float, a longdeck
skateboard and other swag. This was his second first place finish in
two contests.
