O’Neill Surfboard Exhibition Whistler, April 3, 2007
O’Neill Surfboard Exhibition - Whistler, April 13-20, 2007

O’NEILL SURF’S UP! – A Sustainable Surfboard Exhibition

Whistler, British Columbia, April 3, 2007 – O’Neill presents the second annual SURF’S UP! surfboard exhibition in conjunction with BRAVE Art Whistler, during the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

Together with the Surfrider Foundation and Hilltrip, Canadian artists will put their talents to work on handcrafted surfboards from Montreal-based shaping company Guava. Each board will represent the individuality unique to the surf culture and provide a creative interpretation of what going “green” means to this community. “As a heritage surf brand driven by culture, it’s our responsibility to take a leading role and help define the sustainability movement in Canada,” said Max Desjardins, Director of Marketing at O’Neill Canada.

The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, beaches, and waves. More importantly it is dedicated to one of our most precious resources: water. “Water is the lifeblood of this world, and unfortunately it is a resource we haven’t managed well in the past. From pollution through debris, chemicals and sewage we are slowly poisoning our oceans, and in turn the planet as a whole. Water naturally follows the hydrological cycle. This is the cycle that evaporates our ocean and water surfaces, carrying the moisture to our mountains and depositing it as snow and rain. It then travels down through our watersheds back to where it started. This is a closed cycle and anything we do to the water along the way will carry forward as it travels,” comments Surfrider Canada President Adrian Nelson. “Canada has amazing natural wonders and a surprising amount of surf spots, it would be a shame to see any of these disappear because of corporate irresponsibility towards the environment,” added Max.

O’Neill Surf’s UP! events will be making their way to the east coast with stops in Toronto and Montreal (dates and locations to be determined). At the end of each event, every custom board will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation to be auctioned off online at www.surfridervancouver.org . The first exhibition kicks-off on April 13th within the BRAVE Art Whistler event.

2006 Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic December 8, 2006
2nd Annual Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic Called For Friday December 8

2nd Annual Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic Called For Friday December 8!

December 5, 2006

Lincoln City, OR – The contest status for the 2006 Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic, presented by Liquid Militia and the Nelscott Reef Surf Shop, has been moved to green light. Organizers have decided to hold the contest on Friday December 8th and have notified all contestants of the status change.

For the past 5 days, contest organizers have been monitoring the forecasted swell expected for Friday. The latest models show a significant long period swell to be in the 15-18’ range. This swell, combined with a period of 16-17 seconds, should produce waves at Nelscott Reef in the 30-40’ range.

Contestants are now scrambling to make arrangements to get to Oregon. With a 3 month holding period, the contest can be called any time with as little as 48 hours notice. Organizers decided to make the call early to allow a few extra days for everyone to get up to Oregon and maybe get a practice day in before the event. The holding period was lengthened by one month to allow for a greater chance of having good conditions. Ironically, the contest will be held the same weekend as last year’s event in similar, but bigger, conditions.

Although the reef sits about 1/2 mile off the beach, it can be easily seen from shore. A modest pair of binoculars will get you right into the action. The contest will start at 8 AM sharp on Friday morning. People are invited to come watch from the beach at Canyons Park in Lincoln City. There is no parking at the beach, but parking is available in town at the Tangers Outlet Mall, and there will be a shuttle to the beach and back.

The Chinook Winds Casino will be hosting the after party and award ceremony. Doors open 5:30 PM and there are tickets available at the door ($25 - cash only). Food will be served and drinks available at the no-host bar.

Tofino Summer Surfboard Swap first Saturday of each month at Surf Sister
Tofino Summer Surfboard Swap - first Saturday of each month at Surf Sister

Trade boards - Buy boards - Swap boards

the next Surfboard Swap is this Saturday Aug 05 from 9am to 12pm at the Surf Sister backyard.
Anyone can bring a board to sell, any kind of board (also wetsuits!) and especially longboards! You don't have to trade or swap boards, just bring your old or new board, put a price on it and stick around to try to sell it to someone. That's it. Simple! I know there are a lot of people looking to buy a board for the summer and I don't want them to be deterred by thinking they must have a board to bring to the swap, you don't. Just come and look around and see if you can find a board you like.
Spread the word!

Bring any of your surfboards, dust off those boards sitting in the closet, come and find a NEW board to ride!

  • Date: - Saturday Aug 05 (and the first Saturday of each month)
  • Place: Tofino Surf Sister Shop backyard area, 625 Campbell
  • Time: 9am to noon
  • Rain or shine!
  • Hot coffee and pastries available in the store.

Tofino Summer Surfboard Swap - first Saturday of each month at Surf Sister

The first summer surfboard swap was a success!

We had a bit of a wet start with some Tofino drizzle early, but the sky cleared and the sun even came out. The surfboard swap was the place to be last Saturday morning. Surfers came out of the woodwork, bringing with them some great boards. The first sale happened just minutes into the swap. A unique fish shape, a KG board that was super retro, sold like a hot cake! Boards and even wetsuits were lined up like beauty contestants, glistening in the morning mist. Our espresso machine pumped out the good coffee, getting everyone fueled up for a day of good surf and board swapping. The swell was up, finally, after a very slow week of weak surf. Surfers of all ages showed up to admire the line of beauties (boards), checking them all out from head to toe, nose to tail. Here's a photo from early morning- the coffee guzzlers, storytellers, and Mason, looking stoked!

Our next board swap will be Saturday, Aug 05, 9am till noon, at Surf Sister 625 Campbell St in Tofino. The best boards always go fast, so come right at nine to get your best pick! We also want to put the word out for everyone to bring longboards to the swap, if they even exist.

See you soon!

I had an interesting day yesterday. I showed up in the morning to the PA announcer calling for an alternate to fill in for heat number 3. I had an equal 9th in the trials so they said I would be one of the first 4 alternates to get in based on our total score for the round. I check in with the beach marshal as I watch Dusty Payne frantically putting on his wetsuit, and as things in the surf world tend to do it's all changed. They were now telling me that the trails were a separate event that didn't have anything to do with the US Open, and that the alternate list was based on your seeding for the event.(Which is based on last years ratings). Needless to say I was pissed off! The highest alternates had the highest seed in the trials and equal opportunity to make it into the main event through the trials, but even the guys that got two 2's and lost first round were at the top of the list ahead of people who made heats. Another thing was that none of the alternates knew this was the case so they didn't show up. It was a good thing for me. I ended up 21st on the list but only 3 guys ahead of me came down to the beach so I got in at the end of the day in heat 19. With four minutes left in heat 18 they started calling alternates so I went down and they said I was in. The frantic suit up, run down the beach, and paddle out ensued with 2 minutes left to get out there. As I sat down out the back my adrenaline was pumping and I was in no shape to surf a good heat. i ended up calming down enough to put a couple turns together on two lefts to barely advance through to the round of 144. Now I have a rematch against Chris Ward so I'm really excited!

Look for Pete in Round 20 today

Jul/23/2006 Update from Pete
I lost in the last couple seconds in the round of 16 so I placed 9th in the trials. They didn't have it on the net for some reason...The top 8 make it into the main event so I will be one of the first alternates. With 192 guys in the event I should get in. I just have to go down to the beach and wait until someone misses a heat.

David Carson @ the Art Institute of Vancouver March 02, 2006 at 6:30 pm

Graphic designer and typographer (and former pro-surfer) David Carson is coming to Vancouver. The Art Institute is bringing him up for some student workshops, but he will also be speaking at a public event on Thursday, March 02, 2006 at 6:30 pm in our soundstage at 3054 Beta Avenue. It is a free event, but we are expecting a sizeable turn-out, so an RSVP is needed. I am not sure how many folks live in or come to Vancouver on a regular basis, but it may be of interest to some of your readers, particularly those with an interest in the graphic design elements of board design.

» Documentary about Sombrio Beach premiers at Victoria Independent Film Festival.

Vancouver Island filmmaker Paul Manly will be premiering his latest documentary film Sombrio at the twelfth annual Victoria Independent Film Festival. Sombrio documents the end of a diverse community of surfers and squatters that existed on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island for more than thirty years. It captures some of the residents over a two-year period and reveals their personal stories and convictions as they come to terms with their impending eviction.

Sombrio - a documentary about the community at Sombrio beach by Paul Manly

"…If I have a right to life then I have a right to living space… I wasn’t born with dollars in my pocket. I shouldn’t have to chase the big buck all my life just for a place to live." Barbara Oke.

"Ghandi said ‘live simply so others may simply live’ that’s a good quote for me… I’m living simple" David

Since the 1960's, Sombrio Beach has been home to a unique community of "squatters" living in a funky array of beach shacks. A magnet for surfers, social misfits, those who simply wanted off the modern grid, or to live a simpler life, the Sombrio community was an experiment in cooperation, anarchy and self-sufficiency. This ended in the late 1990's when the government evicted the squatters after the integration of Sombrio beach into the greater Juan de Fuca provincial park.

" Sombrio is about a sense of place and brings together the threads of sustainable lifestyle, history and ownership of land, and the stories of creative individuals who dared to live by their passion, skills and ingenuity away from the consumer world. The images of the ocean are stunning and the prowess of virtuoso surfers simply amazing. " Carol Roy, Ph. D - instructor Canadian Studies Trent University.

Sombrio premiers at the Victoria Independent film Festival Sunday January 29th at Plan-B, 1318 Broad St. at 9:30pm. It is also the Saturday night feature at the Nanaimo Global Film Festival at Malaspina University on February 18th and will be playing at the Saltspring Island 'Our Island - Our World Film Festival' March 3-5th.
There will also be a private screening in Port Renfrew on Saturday the 28th at the community center for the people who are in the doc.

» update Jan/28/2006

With only 12 minutes left in his Rd. 2 heat, Peter Devries found himself in the unimaginable position of controlling first place at the 4 star ASP Monster Energy Pipeline Pro on the North shore of O'ahu.

In near perfect 8' west swell conditions, Peter struck first blood within the first few seconds of the starting horn with a Backdoor right, got cleanly shacked for a few seconds then punctuated the ride with a full rail cutback. This put pressure on the other 3 competitors including V-land local and Pipe specialist Kahea Heart. Peter managed to sneak in a few other waves but was still looking for a solid wave that would slam the door shut on the others. While paddling back from a ride, Pete watched as the Japanese pro caught a Pipe left that pushed him into first and Pete into second. With just minutes left, Kahea Heart dropped into a right and got a clean barrel which pushed Pete down to 3rd. Pete required a 5.01 to get him back into 2nd which would advance him into the 3rd Rd and into the money, and with a last minute set stacking, Pete positioned himself for a sick Backdoor wave, dropped in under the lip, disappeared... and came out clean and casual - like he's been surfing Pipe all his life - I thought it was too close to call and it seemed like forever for the judges to post their scores... 4.77!!! just 0.24 less then required to advance - heartbreaking.

Congratulations Pete for advancing out of the first Rd. and earning 65th out of over 120 international pros at your first Pipe event! We look forward to watching you compete for many more years at Pipe and other events around the world on your quest to make the WCT.

Pete Devries will be competing at the upcoming 2 star ASP Van's Pro at Huntington Beach, California, March 22-26.

FIRST EVER OREGON PROFESSIONAL SURF EVENT FINALLY CALLED

December 7, 2005

Lincoln City, OR – The first annual Nelscott Reef Tow-In Contest will be held Sunday December 11th, 2005. Organizers, Behemoth, LLC, run by John Forse, Roland Hoyle and Jim Kusz, decided today to call an official opening to the Nelscott Reef Tow-In Contest, just one week before the end of the contest period, October 15 – December 15, 2005.

As of Thursday, December 1st exclusive contest co-sponsor Action Sports Northwest (actionsportsnw.com) reported “there is a large system forecast to develop in the Pacific that should push some long period, large swell our way. The swell is still about ten days out, but it has good potential so far.”

Contest status was then moved from red alert to yellow to signify the impending weather system and surf conditions.

“It’s been a bit nerve-wracking, we’ve been working on this contest for 4 months and the past 6 weeks have been a nail-biter. But I spoke today with John Forse, the contest founder, and we’re set for the start of the contest this Sunday in Lincoln City,” said Adam Wagner, President of Action Sports Northwest (actionsportsnw.com)

Today, the status was turned to green. The rush is on for competitors to get to the beach for the contest start time of 8AM on Sunday December 11th. The list of competitors, by invitation only, includes the world’s best big wave tow-in surfers including Peter Mel, Jeff Clark, and Mike Parsons, battling it out for the $20,000 purse. There will be an event headquarters located on the cliff above Nelscott Reef and directly overlooking the break. There will be an area for media to shoot from and several sponsors will have booths set up. The contest will be followed by a dinner and award ceremony, open to the public, at the Chinook Winds Casino’s Golf Resort.

The contest is Oregon surfing’s first ever professional competition. The reef was discovered in 1995 by Oregon surfer and contest founder John Forse. Forse attempted to paddle into a huge breaking wave about 1/2 mile offshore from Lincoln City. He wasn't able to catch the wave, but the quest had begun. Ten years later, the wave has been successfully ridden, but only with the assistance of high-powered wave runners.

Cox Bay rezoning application

» Update Nov/01/2005 on Long Beach Lodge Resort and proposed development.

We wanted to provide you with an update regarding Long Beach Lodge Resort, the recent development proposal being considered for the land next door and our efforts in supporting positive development and growth for Tofino.

Earlier this year, the Longboard Development brought to light the need for more public access to Cox Bay and we interviewed a number of community members on their vision for access and positive community growth for the region.

We have also had discussions with our neighbours, The Pettingers of Pacific Sands Resort, and the acting municipal planner, Cleo Corbett. Our purpose for this increased level of communication is to not stop development of the land next door but ensure that it is in keeping with the community plan, addresses the need for improved access to Cox Bay and enhances rather than detracts from the tourism offering that was first built by Pacific Sands and later followed by us at Long Beach Lodge Resort.

The result of this consultation, we feel, has garnered some positive results:

  • Long Beach Lodge and Pacific Sands Resort have both opened up their parking lots to surf schools to enable them to provide access to Cox Bay while enhancing their ability to run their businesses and ensure a safer surfing environment.
  • The Pettingers have agreed to support Long Beach Lodge Resort’s efforts to move public access from the Longboard Development to Maltby Road, where access –though limited- already exists. We are prepared to help fund improvements and have submitted a plan to the municipal planner and council for their review. It is also our understanding that Chris LeFevre, is in support of this alternative solution to better access.

We feel that this leveraged funding will create a much larger and more centrally located public access to Cox Bay, with the potential of expansion and improvement when the adjacent vacant property is brought forward for development. As well, we feel this is a safer alternative, based on the concentration of traffic that will exist with a number of driveways leading off and onto the highway from the resorts’ and info centre parking.

It is estimated, that with improvements, Maltby Road access can accommodate as many as 65-90 parking stalls. We also feel that public safety will benefit from a better access point for emergency vehicles. Improved washrooms, seating areas, handicap access, picnic tables, and added security features to control after hours use will be just some of the benefits of a single, central access location.

  • Long Beach Lodge Resort has come onboard as a sponsor of the BC Surfing Association in support of local surfers who are building a reputation on the national and international surfing circuit and will assist in hosting an upcoming surfing competition in 2006. This is along with our current sponsorship of the Raincoast Interpretive Centre (Gold Sponsor) the Pacific Rim Whale Festival and upcoming Clayoquot Oyster Festival. We also assisted with funding for last summer's Tall Ships Celebration.
  • In addition Long Beach Lodge Resort has also supported the creation of a skateboard park, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Tofino General Hospital Palliative Care.

The Longboard Project is progressing through the rezoning process with the District of Tofino and our concerns regarding the proposed development are as follows:

  • As part of the project design, the developer has proposed a 30-vehicle public parking lot and public beach access via a pathway. However unless this pathway is relocated it will negatively impact Long Beach Lodge Resort, due to privacy issues.
  • Also, the proposed 30 –stall paved parking lot and paved pathway will see a number of trees removed from a site that is already impacted due to the resort development. The parking lot and pathway will also occupy an area very close to a fish-bearing waterway. At this time there is no indication of the appropriate environmental impact studies, including a tree survey, being undertaken prior to rezoning being approved.
  • We are also concerned that the project is being processed in two phases: the rezoning of the site, followed by the approval of a development permit for the project. In most jurisdictions, this project would be deemed sufficiently large and complex enough to apply for both rezoning and development permit so they can be processed at the same time.

Our concern is due to the fact that there are development issues that are not being addressed at the time of rezoning but left to the development permit stage to be resolved. Several of these issues, some of which we have addressed in this note, that have major implications on the project design, environment and impacts on the adjacent properties. We simply are requesting the municipality not grant final rezoning approval until a development permit is ready for final approval, to avoid the situation where the site is zoned and studies required for the development permit approval bring to light required or desired plan amendments.

As mentioned earlier, the benefits of proposed change is it causes people to communicate and collaborate on a vision for the future. It is our hope that Long Beach Lodge Resort will continue to be a successful economic generator for the community and by being successful, continue to give back even more to help the local residents of Tofino. We are not against development and welcome ideas and proposals that enhance what is already being offered as one of the West Coast’s most dynamic destinations.

Our concern is over the speed in which this proposal is being pushed forward, rather than providing everyone an opportunity to review and comment on the alternatives being offered. The Longboard development proposal, as it stands now, has serious implications to two tourism operators and we feel that there are solutions to be found to change that.

There is a public hearing scheduled for the Longboard Project on Monday, November 14th and we will be pleased to hear your comments on not only this development but other areas where you feel Long Beach Lodge Resort may benefit the community. Please feel free to forward this note to anyone you feel is interested.

We would be happy to meet with you in person to discuss any of these issues or please feel free to email or call us at:

» Update October 24, 2005 at the District of Tofino Council

DELEGATION:
2. Chris LeFevre, LeFevre & Co.
Owner/Applicant: 1431 Pacific Rim Highway Inc.

Chris LeFevre, LeFevre & Co., advised that he is here to present a brief overview of the development proposal for 1431 Pacific Rim Highway and to answer questions from Council. He provided a background on the application, advising that it is a major proposal that provides substantial amenities. A public information meeting was held with the neighbours and staff. The commercial component has been removed as it was not favoured by the neighbouring property owners and other interested stakeholders. Parking has also been reduced. He advised that he is well aware of the intent of the amenity density bonusing bylaw and its contents. Public access and washrooms are on the table and the proposal meets the OCP guidelines. Jennifer Kay, MCIP, Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden Architects + Urbanistes, presented a conceptual plan of their proposal and an explanation of the site for tourism development. She went over the key statistics and technical details. Public amenities include 30 public parking stalls that would be turned over and managed by the District of Tofino. Ms. Kay and Mr. LeFevre answered questions from Council regarding on-site management, vegetation retention and access for emergency vehicles.

Cox Bay rezoning application - LeFevre Long Board restaurant & condominium Hotel

LeFevre Long Board restaurant & condominium Hotel

There is a rezoning application before Tofino city council for the property between Pacific Sands and Long Beach resorts. It is a 150 foot wide property at 1431 Pacific rim highway. The plan includes public parking, public washrooms and change facilities, and public beach access. There is a 36 unit condominium hotel, & restaurant lounge.

This is the original application for a proposed project. If we can get a hold of the updated version which nixes the commertial components.

Standup Flow Rider comes to Duncan ETA - approx 2 years
the proposed Chesterfield Sportsplex in Duncan comes complete with a Flow Rider pool

Duncan has just received another 5 million for our Chesterfield Sportsplex. Cowichan valley is growing by leaps and bounds. Duncan is hosting the BC Senior games here in August 2005 and the NAIG (North American Indigenous Games) in August 2008. The Chesterfield Sportsplex will include:

  • a new arena with 2300+ seats as the 2010 Olympics are not far away.
  • State of the art weight room with Physio and Chiro.
  • 8 lane pool not sure if it will be 25m or 50m yet
  • waterslides
  • Therapy pool, lazy river
  • Flow Rider.
  • We have allotted space for the flow rider to be put in depending on the response we get from the public will determine the size:

    Flow Rider . Standup 77' x 40'

    OR

Flow Rider with Action River Standup 138' x 175'

We decided on Flow Rider as Nanaimo and Victoria both have wave pools. Being in-between both Ferry ports, on the way to Tofino and Sooke this would be a place where surfers would catch a great wave every time.

If you would like to have access to the larger Flow Rider setup, send a word of support by email to Flowrider_Bertrand@hotmail.com

» You use supplied soft boards and most people ride prone.

Vancouver Island’s Jeremy Koreski has launched an all-new, expanded edition of his website at www.jeremykoreski.com. Jeremy’s still images have made him one of the more prominent recorders of the West Coast’s current cultural and environmental milieu, and with 2002’s Numb, the upcoming Shrink and a range of water-based film work, he’s becoming one of the rising talents in Canadian adventure filmmaking. The site is a display of Koreski’s new work and is stacked with the sick action, atmospherics and portraiture that form the foundation of his singular style. A few of the Tofino local’s framed black and white studies are also currently on display at Tofino’s Lounge Collection.

La Nina’s Leashes - Cold Surf Co

Vancouver Island’s indigenous surf industry is quite the proliferate thing these days, and with the talents of shapers like Stefan Aftanas, Louis Robert and Carl White the Island waveriding community seems to be nearing self-sufficiency. The best stuff, as British Columbians are sure to know, is homegrown, and the recently established Cold Surf Co. is joining the local industry as a provider of ultra-functional surf accessories. The babychild of Tofino resident Nina Waltl, Cold’s territory is leashes, board bags and board socks, as well as canine leashes for our ever-stoked quadripedal surf check companions.

La Nina’s Leashes - Cold Surf Co

Cold’s product comes from solid sources – no suspicious Third World manufacturing, all of it handmade by Nina and her industrial sewing machine. A snowboarder who discovered surfing in the ‘90’s in Morocco, Nina ended up on the Island and has since distinguished herself as one of the few female year-round regulars at the Tofino breaks. “Last fall and winter I was surfing a lot, and had a lot of time to think,” she says, “and that’s when I had the idea and started to go ahead with it. I had help from the government’s self-employment program, they kind of hold your hand through the whole process of starting a business, and without that help and support this would’ve been really hard to do.”

Nina’s leashes are an independent Canadian alternative to American and Australian products, and they’re of equal, if not superior, quality. They’re cold water specific, with longer ankle straps to accommodate the thickness of a wetsuit and boots, and they’ve got key pockets for our somewhat untrustworthy parking lots. Sewn-on leash loops, brass swivels rated to 800 pounds and hand-tied urethane cords mean no breakage of v-molded plastic parts, and that means no swimming in after leashes fly apart in frigid winter storm swells. They’re made for locals by locals, and that for sure is a good thing.

With their stylized logo of a maple leaf laid over the Oxford mathematician John Wallis’ 17th-century infinity symbol, Cold’s goods have been steadily appearing in the Island lineups over the last few months, and Nina has enlisted Tofino locals Ollie Atkey and grom ripper / future world champion Noah Cohen as her first team riders. “When you know the people you’re selling to,” Nina says, “you have a lot more invested in making sure it’s a good product, because your reputation is depending on it.” She seems to have stood by that statement; her designs are getting great reviews and proving themselves to be of the highest quality.

    Vancouver Island:

Four stories from what one author describes as ‘The Last Coast’. Surfing is big here, like everything else, but wilderness dominates so it almost always feels empty. Sometimes the waves are huge, perfect and heavy, but they’re always, always cold. Watch out for whale, heavy locals and the occasional stray Bigfoot.

Surfing Vancouver Island through the stories of the Bruhwiler Bros is well written and informative. Love the geological, area economics and surf history mix. This article told me lots I didn't already know and did so with discretion and respect. Awesome double page of a Pete Devries air on an Addiction board and 16 other photos.

British Columbia Association of Surf Instructors

    Press Release: BCASI

BRITISH COLUMBIA ASSOCIATION OF SURF INSTRUCTORS

british columbia association of surf instructors There is a new organization dedicated solely to surfing, an organization with a mission not yet ever accomplished in Canada. The organization is called the British Columbia Association of Surf Instructors. Its mission is to set standards for surfing schools and instructors in Canada. This is not an easy task, but a core group of dedicated individuals have taken it upon themselves to change the world. The world of surfing in Canada, that is!

Until now, there have never been any rules or regulations for the safety or training of surf instructors. Nor have there ever been rules about surf schools being required to have liability insurance, or maximum instructor: student ratios. These things may not seem like a big deal to you. You may think, "Why bother? Who cares? We don’t need more rules!" Here are a few good reasons that may change your mind.

Surf schools are very popular in Tofino right now. Every visitor wants to get into the water and give it a try. Take the risk! Feel the Rush! They’ve all seen Blue Crush or Pointbreak, and decided this is the summer to give it a try. With so many schools to choose from, almost every visitor can find a school tailored to their needs, whether it’s women only, or ego-inflated male only, or a mish-mosh, there is something for everyone. How do you know which school to go to? Besides price checking, the next step is quality checking. Ideally, you want to find a surf school with a reliable name, one with qualified surf instructors and proper equipment, and one that has adequate insurance.

A good surf school can back up the claims made on its website.

    • "We have insurance!"
    • "Our instructors are highly trained!"
    • "We provide the best equipment on the market!"
As a customer, how do you get proof these claims are true? That’s where the BCASI comes in. An association dedicated to establishing the highest standards for the industry will add reliability to those claims. There would be nothing worse than a slacking (and lacking) surf school ruining the reputation of surfing in Tofino. All it takes is one bad accident with negligence on the part of the surf school for that business to go down.

The BCASI is setting standards designed to promote the safety and credibility of instructors, students, and surf schools. With regulations that standardize instructor training and surf school operation, the industry becomes stronger and more effective. Pacific Rim National Park is also in the process of setting standards for surf schools operating within the park boundary. The word from Parks Canada is that the BCASI is doing all the hard work for them, and they are glad to see the local operators taking the initiative to get this going. Parks has said they will review the BCASI standards and adopt them as industry standards with minor park-specific modifications.

These days, surfing is considered an extreme sport that everyone can try. Anyone new to the sport sees only the risk of getting pummeled in the big scary ocean by big scary waves. To the trained eye, surfing embodies peace, stoke, harmony, and power. These are the ingredients for a long healthy life as a surfer, and what we hope to share with the tourists who come to Tofino. Sharing our ocean knowledge is a great bonus for the planet. I won’t get into it here, but, for example, if everyone cared more about the ocean we wouldn’t have to surf in polluted water!

The BCASI has developed instructor qualifications, a training program for new instructors, and surf school guidelines. The association is still in the formative stages and we ask that all surf school operators, instructors, and others interested, join other now and make your voice heard. The Board of Directors is looking for members, and this association is for you! If you are interested in becoming a member and supporting the BCASI can contact us at info@bcasi.com, or check out our web site at www.bcasi.com

    UPDATE:
british columbia association of surf instructors

The next BCASI meeting is set for 9am Sept 10th, at the Tin Wis Best Western dining room in Tofino. We will have a representative from Parks Canada there to tell us of their new regulations for surf school operators in the park, as well as brainstorming for the future of the association.

The BCASI stands to benefit any surf school involved. All surf school operators are invited to attend, as this association will only progress with everyone's active participation and enthusiasm.

    Thanks,
    Jenny Stewart
    For the BCASI

    UPDATE:

The Sept 10th meeting was a success! In attendance were representatives from Bruhwiler Surf Camp, Inner Rhythm Surf Camp, Pacific Surf School, and Surf Sister Surf School. Also in attendance at the meeting were representatives from Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and the Surfrider Foundation.

We are trying to get the ball rolling, so the next BCASI meeting is Oct 1st at 9am at the Tin Wis in Tofino.
