THE EVENT The 2013 Reef ISA World Surfing Games will gather 25 National Delegations from every corner of the world, who will gather to compete for their National Team in an “Olympic-Style” event. The surfers compete for medals and the honor of representing their respective countries.
THE VENUE Panama is the southernmost country of Central America, bordered to the north by the Caribbean Sea, to the south by the Pacific Ocean, to the east by Colombia and to the west by Costa Rica. Its early status as a transit country with its famous Panama Canal, has allowed Panama to become a meeting point of cultures from around the globe.Santa Catalina is a quiet surf town located in the Province of Veraguas and is home to several hundred people who lead simple lives, many as fishermen. The world’s best surfers will gather to compete for the Individual and Team Gold Medals, the International Olympic Committee President’s Trophy and the Fernando Aguerre World Team Trophy,
THE WAVE The event was scheduled to take place during the active Southern Hemisphere swell season that produces great waves for the region. Santa Catalina will provide a long right with an incredible barrel section. The main wave is located approximately 300 meters from shore, so you can get there paddling or by boat. It is a break that picks up sizeable waves in any type of swell coming mainly from the south or southwest. The wave is world-class. It breaks along a shallow reef that creates a perfect right-hand powerful and hollow wave. Santa Catalina handles solid swells in the 8-12 feet range.
THE SCHEDULE The Parade of the Nations is a colorful and energy-filled event, complete with teams chanting, waving flags and the cheering of the locals who come out to watch the spectacle. The 2013 Reef ISA WSG will officially open on May 4 with the traditional ISA Opening Ceremony, which will include the Parade of the Nations and Sands of the World Ceremony. The Sands of the World Ceremony symbolizes the true fraternal spirit that bonds together all members of the global surfing tribe. The union of the countries of the world in this Ceremony is symbolized through the mixing of the sands from the shores of all participating National Delegations, showcasing the ISA desire for a better and peaceful world.

Sitka welcomes Nico Manos to their surf team
March 2013
Nico, right at home - Scotty Sherin photo
Sitka is proud to welcome surfer, Nico Manos, to the family. Nico has been surfing the cold water waves of Canada's East Coast for 13 years.
"We're very excited and proud to have Nico join our team," says Sitka's Surf Team Manager, Rene Gauthier. "He's East Coast's top surfer, and one heck of a nice guy."

Sponsors: Sitka, Oakley, Sanuk, Future Fins, Creatures of Leasure.
Hometown: Lawrencetown Beach
People You Admire: "I admire surfers like Pete, Raph, Fergal, Ramon for what they have accomplished with no path to follow. Whether it's exploration, charging or pure surfing ability these guys work harder and are more dedicated than just about anyone I have met.
I admire surfers like Ben Bougeois, Alek Parker, Josh Mulcoy, Otto Flores for making huge names for themselves but not letting that effect what genuinely nice, amazing, strong characters they are.
I admire my local surfing heros like Marty and Todd King, J.D. Patterson, Paul Cammalleri not just for their surfing abilities, but for the people that they are... They never pushed any morals or beliefs on me but I tried to absorb the way they handled themselves, both in and out of the water, when I was growing up.
Outside of surfing, I admire my mom, who is 70, retired and does things like spend half of the year shovelling cement in Costa Rica for Habitat for Humanity."
Jobs outside of surfing: "I don't have a real job outside of surfing. I like carpentry and woodworking (my wife and I built the house we live in). I like photography. I own a surf school that operates in July and August, I guess that is a real job."
You hear the word 'pioneer' thrown around the surf industry pretty loosely these days, but there's really no better title for Sitka's newest surf team member. Nico Manos has spent a large portion of the last decade hunting for new setups along the north atlantic coast... You can bet your house that he had a hand in finding any of the slabs, wedges and vacant points you see in the mags (He was probably pulling his 5mm on as fast as he could right alongside the photographer getting the shot). "I remember finding Minutes when I was a kid. It was still a bit of a secret back then, which seems hard to believe. That feeling I got coming out of the trees and seeing the lineup has stuck with me and comes back every now and then when we stumble on something new."
We have a gear swap coming up this weekend! Please get the word out that we are accepting gear for a percentage of the sale going towards the lands @ Jordan River. Also we are going to be screening Nixon's "come hell or high water"
this Sunday in Market Square, Victoria. The Small Pebbles = Big Beach Campaign will help raise funds for the purchase of Jordan River in conjunction with BC Parks and The Land Conservacy. The new park at Jordan River will forever protect Jordan River against development and keep our little slice of surfing paradise unspoilt forever.
We are trying to bring as many ocean and surf oriented people together next weekend for a big board swap, a screening of "Come Hell or High Water" - with guest speaker, Mark Cunningham ! We will be serving beer all day and hopefully managing to raise some money in the process. Check it all out on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SmallPebblesBigBeachFundraisingCampaign
A couple of the local shops have also stepped up for people offering to sell and donate proceeds to Small Pebbles = Big Beach. Check out the incentives below:
- If you bring in a wetsuit with value of $200 and donate 50 % - 100% to Small Pebbles = Big Beach, you will get a voucher for 25% off any brand new wetsuit.
- Bring in a surf or paddle board that sells for over $300, and get $50 off any new board.

Wickaninnish Sand Dunes closed due to risk of Unexploded Explosive Ordnances
Public info sessions May 15 - 16, 2012
Wickaninnish Sand Dunes closed due to risk of Unexploded Explosive Ordnances Public information sessions scheduled for May 15th and 16th
UCLUELET, May 8, 2012– To protect public safety, Parks Canada is temporarily closing the Wickaninnish Sand Dunes due to the possible presence of Unexploded Explosive Ordnances (UXO) dating back to World War II.
The public is invited to learn more about the closures and UXOs by attending one of two public information sessions held by Parks Canada and the Department of National Defence. The sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, May 15th at 7:30pm at the Tofino Ecolodge, Tofino Botanical Gardens and Wednesday, May 16th at 7:30pm at the Ucluelet Community Centre.
The sand dunes were used for training by the Canadian Forces during the 1940s and 1950s before the establishment of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The discovery of a UXO in February 2012 prompted the Department of National Defence to examine the sand dunes further.
The Department of National Defence UXO and Legacy Sites Program has made preliminary recommendations to restrict access to the dune area as a precautionary measure until a more extensive examination can be made in the near future. Parks Canada Agency is working with the Department of National Defence to develop a strategy to address this potential hazard.
If a possible UXO is found, visitors are advised:
Do not touch it
Remember or mark the location from a safe distance
Leave the area
Call 911 or local police as soon as possible.
The rest of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, including Wickaninnish Beach, remains open.

a new made-in Canada Surf Series from Vice and Red Bull
Vice and Red Bull Present a new made-in Canada Surf Series,
SURFS UP HERE
TORONTO, ON (April 27, 2012) VICE Canada and Red Bull want to let you in on a little secret that a select few have always known, that when it comes to chasing waves, Canada's massive coastline actually rules. The only thing is, it takes a lot of dedication and determination.
Surfs Up Here is a new video series that follows Canadian pros on the East and West coasts as they show some Yankee friends the ropes, and dig into our biggest, best, and mostly untapped resource - the Canadian outdoors. With a little help from some seaplane and chopper pilots, we dive deep into remote areas as our surfers hunt down world-class waves in our own rugged and wild backyard.
With an immersive, driving, and dark original score written and performed by John Fraser Carpenter and Ben Koller (drummer of Converge), ride along with our frostbitten pros as they wax their boards, swing axes, and explore the remote and often hauntingly beautiful coastlines.
About this Video
This is episode #1 of a six part series exploring Canada's extensive coastline. We start with the West and finish with the East check http://www.redbull.ca/ each Thursday and Monday for the next installment

Drum Surfboard by Jarom Speers [2012 Pacific Rim Whale Festival Grand Prize]
Drum Surfboards is a Ucluelet based company that designs and manufactures hollow wooden surfboards. Owner, Jarom Speers explains the construction that is similar to the wing of an airplane. A rib and stringer inner framework forms the shape and top deck, bottom deck and rails made from ¼" planks of wood such as Sitka Spruce, Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar are applied to the framework. The finish is 4oz fiberglass and epoxy.
Appropriately named the "Whale Rider" this year's grand prize hollow wooden surfboard features a unique whale tail design on the deck and is equipped with a bonzer style quad fin setup. Light and fast this surfboard is 100% wood composition and rings in at a meagre 12lb total weight.
Jarom explains; that like him owning a Drum Surfboard might change your outlook on surfing. A hollow wooden surfboard if cared for properly can last a lifetime, is environmentally sustainable and can bring you a sense of harmony and synergy with the planet when riding or simply enjoying the natural beauty of a hollow wooden surfboard.
The British Columbia Surfing Association (BCSA) is reorganizing
Wed, 29 Feb 2012
This is a call to the last BCSA executive Board of Directors to step down. The association has been dormant for two years. A renewed interest has expressed a desire and need for the reorganization of the BCSA. This will include establishing a new board of directors with clear set responsibilities. It will also review the mission statement and bylaws in an effort to formalize the association to provincial government standards. The renewed association will develop programs and hold events under its mandate. The current training and coaching of the BC members of the Canadian Junior Surf Team (in preparation for the World Juniors in Panama, April 2012) will be considered such a program under the reorganization of the BCSA.
An active bank balance of $210.00 is sitting in the Tofino CIBC account and will be donated to the BC members of the Canadian Junior Surf Team.
Once the remaining members of the last Board of Directors have made notification, a meeting date and Tofino location will be announced. This meeting is expected to take place following Spring Break. To date, Stephen Mayor Acting President/Treasurer has graciously stepped down and sends his best wishes for success. As Secretary/Judging Manager I, Barbie Mayor have also stepped down but will remain the responsible party for the bank account until the establishment of a new board. It is my wish for the continuation of a transparent and democratic provincial governing body for the sport of surfing in British Columbia. The new interest group wish to thank the departing Board of Directors for their dedication to BC and Canadian surfing.
The remaining board members can announce their leave and further inquiries can also be made to oursurfingcanada@gmail.com

Sitka and Pacific Wild Release Online ‘Tipping Barrels’ a film by Ben Gulliver
Victoria, BC Canada Sitka and Pacific Wild, a non-profit conservation organization, are excited about the release of ‘Tipping Barrels’ a film by Ben Gulliver. ‘Tipping Barrels’ is a unique combination of surfing and environmental journalism that follows surfers Arran and Reid Jackson on a trip into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, where they learn more about the region and the issues confronting it.
The main issue presented in the film is Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline, which would pump crude oil from Alberta to Kitimat, on the North Coast of British Columbia. Here it would be loaded onto super tankers bound for markets in Asia and the U.S. Over 225 super tankers a year would transit the narrow waterways that make up the Great Bear Rainforest, putting one of the Earth’s most ecologically sensitive and intact ecosystems at risk of an oil spill.
The video accompanies other efforts by Sitka to bring awareness to the proposed pipeline, such as donating the profits from past clothing designs and an upcoming t-shirt designed with Stan Robinson to the efforts against the proposal. Sitka also recently held a fundraiser in their Victoria shop with photos by Ian McAllister, Thomas Peschak and Michael Reid displayed as part of a silent auction. There will be a similar event in Sitka’s Vancouver store soon.
Sitka and Pacific Wild stand together with First Nations groups and thousands of concerned citizens, in the effort to keep the Great Bear Rainforest oil tanker free. They invite everyone concerned about the future of B.C.’s coast to watch the film and help spread the word. If you would like to make a donation, you can do so through Tides Canada at http://tidescanada.org/support/pacific-wild/.
