Steve Millen’s winning Chinook weighed in at 36.7 lbs just hours before the close of the derby at the Kingfisher Marina on the Bamfield harbour. Steve Millen of Parksville claimed $5000.00 for first place. A second place prize of $3000.00 was won by Chad Green’s 36 lb fish, a $1000.00 3rd Place prize was won by Jona Reid, and a fourth place prize of $500.00 was won by Michael Own with a 35.5lb Chinook.
Prizes were awarded at the closing ceremonies in the Pachena Bay Campground which included a traditional salmon barbeque and a table loaded with participation and hidden weight prizes. Prize monies were sponsored by Weyerhaeuser, Hayes Forest Services, Chatwin Engineering and Huu-ay-aht First Nations.
Huu-ay-aht’s Fish Derby was organized for the second year in a row to raise funds for watershed and fisheries restoration. Of particular importance to the Huu-ay-aht is the restoration of the largest river in their traditional territory, the Sarita. The Sarita River traditionally sported a rich and varied salmon population which was decimated by several causes including: the logging styles of the 1950s, over fishing, El Nino and global warming.
Today the Huu-ay-aht is working proactively and often in partnership with their neighbors on several fronts to improve their fish populations. Activities include watershed restoration, river restoration (removing log jams, creating spawning habitat etc). With over 200 tickets sold at $25.00/rod, Huu-ay-aht First Nations was able to raise over $5000.00 to go towards these efforts.
