May is one of my favorite times to fish these waters for two reasons. The halibut fishing is fantastic and you barely see another boat on the water.
Halibut are being found in good numbers and close to shore right now. Try working any of the under water structure off Catala Island, Tatchu point or Ferrer point in 30m or more. Most fish are being taken on large herring, sardines and octopus fished off a spreader bar. Artificials also have their place with Power Bait, Mudrakers and Norwegian jigs being top producers. The ebb tide seems to be producing more fish and like always the hour around tide change being the best bite time. The majority of fish being caught are in the 30-80lb range with e few of the larger females also being hooked. If the wind is up and you are having trouble holding a good drift try trolling your salmon gear along the bottom, you might be surprised what you hook up.
Feeder and migratory Chinook are now being caught in the offshore waters of Esperanza . Most fish are being taken at 40-70m in 100-130m of water. Hoochies, Road Runner spoons and Coyote spoons in glow green, cop car and bad attitude are all working. For a little more excitement on the rod try running dummy flashers off your cannon balls when trolling spoons. This gives you an unbeatable battle from those smaller fish. When fishing offshore I try to locate a school of bait and figure out which way they are moving, and move with them. Working one downrigger line above the bait and one below. The majority of fish being caught are 10-25lb. The action can come on fast and furious for a short time period so make sure you have all the leaders and other necessary gear ready for that bite. Fumbling around for gear is the last thing you want to be doing when the fish are on the feed.
