Nanaimo River lower deck

Nanaimo River lower deck

Nanaimo River crag is located where the power lines cross the Nanaimo River. Climbing at the water's edge has it's advantages on a hot day. Be careful of this river when it's running fast. Steep trail down to a tight trail along the base.

directions: Between Ladysmith and Nanaimo follow the Bungy Zone signs off the Island highway west up the Nanaimo Lakes road. From the hwy go 2.5 km, past the Zone and Hub Paving gravel pit.

yellow gate
Park under the power lines and hike under the yellow gate and down the lane way to the edge of the river canyon. The path down is immediately to the left. Very steep path works to the right and forks. One path runs between the decks and the other is a tough scramble down the slope and along among the boulders in the river bed. The lower deck has an expansive platform at it's base and a 6 to 10' overhang.
Somebody told me the Nanaimo River used to empty into the head of Ladysmith harbour [oyster bay] up until an earthquake altered it's course 2000 years ago. I just can't remember who it was.
